Rodel Mayol’s career defining victory over Miranda + post-fight interview

Filipinos dominated Island Assault IV; Viloria and Mayol assaulted Mexican opponents

13 May 2012, 1:39 pm

In a spectacular and very dominating passion WBO Flyweight Champion Brian "The Hawaiian Punch" Viloria retains his title via a 9th round TKO against his nemesis Omar Nino Romero of Mexico at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City,
This is the 3rd meeting between this two warriors where their two previous meetings were both competitive and highly contested.
Viloria started the fight hot as he found the target very early hitting Romero with his quick jabs and counter left cross that makes Mexican challenger smile every time he got hit. That became the pattern of the fight where Romero seems having a hard time solving the Viloria puzzle which was totally different from the Viloria he fought twice before. Accurate punches especially with his counter punching Viloria keeps on scoring as the fight progresses. The first of the many solid bombs came in the fourth round were Viloria caught the awkward Romero with a powerful Right cross that wobbled his Mexican opponent legs and almost put him on the canvass with the barrage of follow up punches from the Hawaiian Punch but veteran tricks from the Mexican with his continuous low blows stops Viloria's momentum and also urged the referee to deduct a point from the Mexican challenger.
On the 5th round Viloria found his mark again with a powerful right that started Romero to bleed from his left eyelid. Solid combinations, accurate power punches and proper pacing was very evident in the fight as Viloria took every round from his Mexican Challenger.
And on the 9th round Romero's punishments finally came to an end when Viloria threw a powerful combination that sent Romero back in to the ropes and a flurry of follow ups pushed American referee Michael Ortega to stop the fight and at the same time his corner man was already climbing in the ring to also do the same. The stoppage looks pre mature for others but with the wobbled Romero looked hurt and with almost a minute left in the round Viloria could have landed bigger or brutal damage if the fight wasn't stopped.
At the post fight press conference Viloria dedicated the fight to the late Filipino Hawaiian Andi Ganigan who also made a name for himself like Viloria back in the 80's.
In the supporting main event Rodel Mayol in one of his best performances in many years totally dismantled the tough Cesar Pingo Miranda of Mexico.
With three knockdowns and many one sided rounds scored, Mayol won the fight via unanimous decision 100-87, 99-88 and 97-91. Solid jab straight combinations and good lateral movement opened a lot of opportunities from the Mandaue Native. Early in the 1st round Mayol caught Miranda with a powerful left hook that sent the former world champion into the canvass. A solid double uppercut from Mayol staggered the Mexican and knocked him down again in to the 2nd round. In the 5th round and as the fight starting to become a one sided affair Mayol caught Miranda again with a perfect body shot that sent the Mexican down again for the 3rd time.
Despite those three knockdowns the Mexican kept on moving forward and didn't stop pressuring the Filipino former world champion, but Mayol's superb skills and perfect game plan coming into the fight secured the Filipino's victory.

Las Vegas, Nevada - Miguel Cotto did all he could to defend his WBA super welterweight crown against Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Saturday night in front of a jam-packed MGM Grand Arena crowd for boxing's Cinco-de-Mayo treat.

Cotto landed clean lead lefts, worked Mayweather's body, threw various combinations, and even danced in the ring at times like Mayweather did on TV's "Dancing with the Stars". Cotto did all he could in penetrating Mayweather's shoulder roll defense, pinning him against the ropes and landed some good shots that bloodied the undefeated braggart's nose.

In the end, however, it was not enough to thwart Mayweather's talent, skill and heart as he kept his record unblemished with a 12-round unanimous decision victory in an action-packed showdown between two of the sport's biggest Pay-Per-View draws. The judges' cards, which read 117-111, 117-111, and 118-110 after the bout, weren't indicative of how closely the fight was contested.

It took a valiant late salvo from Mayweather and a declining Cotto who was starting to succumb to fatigue in the latter rounds, to seal the 43rd W in Money's resume.

Mayweather-Cotto brought out the stars in an event boxing desperately needed. Pop star Justin Bieber and rapper Lil Wayne celebrated with Mayweather in the ring after his victory, as some of Hollywood's biggest names sat ringside.

Mayweather did not make good of his promise of a one-sided domination, and with Cotto's performance against Mayweather, fans couldn't help but clamor for a Manny Pacquiao showdown anew. Pacquiao made quick work of Cotto two years ago in a dominating performance that saw the rugged Boricua kiss the canvas twice, but also struggled against Juan Manuel Marquez in his last fight after Mayweather easily dispatched him in 12 back in 2009.

Will we ever see it happen? Not even Manny, or "Ninong" knows when I asked him two weeks ago in Baguio. Mayweather did tell HBO's Larry Merchant after the fight that he still wants to make a Pacquiao fight happen, and rehashed his old tunes about random blood tests and the money split. "Let's make a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight happen," he said.

My Manny Pacquiao Experience Baguio 2012

27 Apr 2012, 12:02 pm

With few weeks away before his much awaited clash with Timothy Bradley on June 9th your
scribe was given a chance to watch Manny Pacquiao train and do his preparations for the
said upcoming fight

The chance was a once in a lifetime experience seeing one of the best boxers who ever
lived train and at the same time entertain his fans.

We started the day by planning to catch Manny Pacquiao do his morning routines at the
Burnham Park Oval. Me with Snow Badua and Dennis "DSource" Guillermo came there early and
had a chance to talk with Pacquiao's asst. trainer Buboy Fernandez and some team Pacquiao
members who was also waiting for the Champ to arrive.

Around 8am Pacquiao and his training team arrived at the said place. Pacquiao started his
day at the oval with a smile and wave to his fans who was eager to see him in person and
some of them been waiting for hours already just to see their idol.

Pacquiao and his training crew began their routine by jogging 10 rounds on the said oval.
Pacquiao and 7 of his training men do jog with him but as each lap passed by you will
notice that there's only few who can stand or match Pac's stamina and endurance as one by
one they started to walk and stop running.

After running Pacquiao immediately went to his stretching routine he also did some sit
ups. Pacquiao never fail to entertain his fans as he took some pictures with them while
he's doing his stretchings. A military platoon who's also watching Pacquiao train didn't
miss the chance to also have a picture with the people's champ.

One of the biggest changes that you will notice on this years camp is the Bible study
session of Pacquiao itself. After finishing his stretching routines and changing his
clothes he quickly grabbed his Bible and started reading some verses together with his
former bodyguard and his secretary. The Bible study lasted for more than an hour longer
than the time he gave on his morning run and routines.

One of the lines Pacquiao mentioned while preaching was "If you read the
Bible you have hope with you, because there's a lot of promises here. That if you believe
and have faith on that you can have it". "This is available for everybody (BIble) not
only for Manny Pacquiao this for all of us all we need to do is to read it". Pacquiao
added.

While Pacquiao was doing his Bible preaching we had a chance to interview Buboy Fernandez
and asked him few question regarding their preparations against Bradley. Fernandez said
that they were done reviewing Bradleys past fights and they already have a game plan
against the said American.

Pacquiao's morning training session ended around past 11am me with my mentors Dennis
Guillermo and Snow badua went back to our place to rest a bit and also to prepare our
stuffs as we're also set to check Pacquaio later that day for his afternoon training
session.

At exactly 2pm we went to Shape Up Boxing gym located at the Cooyeesan Hotel Plaza where
Pacquiao is having his gym training. Unlike the morning session we saw more personalities
from team Pacquiao at the gym and one of them was his Coach Freddie Roach. The afternoon
session was started with a silent prayer from Pacquiao, after the prayer Pacquiao went
directly to business by doing some shadow boxing inside the ring. Mitts with coach Roach,
heavy bag, speed ball and jumping ropes quickly followed.

Fast, conditioned and happy those were the traits very evident on Pacquiao with the whole
day we're watching his training singing while training and preaching different bible
verses are some of the things you will notice to him very often. His sparring session
will start this week as for his assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez they'll be bringing a
Russian spar mate who has a similarity with Bradley's style of fighting.

We also got lucky to have a chance to throw some questions to both Manny Pacquiao and
Coach Freddie Roach. We asked Pacquiao about the defense and fighting style that he'll be
using for Bradley and he confirmed that the Ledwaba, Hatton and De La Hoya fighting
strategies will be the one they'll be using against Bradley. For Coach Roach he was very
aware about Bradleys fighting style but he can see that the Filipino Destroyer wont have
a hard time disposing the Undefeated American. When we asked if we can see a knockout on
June 9 Coach Roach quickly answered a yes.

The afternoon training session ended around 5pm. We went back to our cottage review all
the videos and pictures we took the whole day and continue our summer vacation there in
Baguio.

The Erik “El Terrible” Morales Deception

28 Mar 2012, 7:43 am
Erikpac

By: Jose Minano / Photo by Jed Jacobsohn - Getty Images

I watched a hell of a fight last Saturday night.

I saw an Erik Morales as still one of the greats that Mexico has to offer; Skills, & tactical greatness., moving, countering & accuracy.

After the 6th round you see Morales slowing down. His condition wasn’t there. He looked overweight and fat. He was hanging from the sides of his trunks. Morales can get his condition back, strength & speed, if he were to invest in himself as Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez did when he hired Guillermo Hereida as his conditioning coach. Hereida took Marquez to a different level of competition & could get Morales in that same level.

If Morales were to invest in himself with a conditioning coach, he will be able to compete against these new young comers. Imagine a well conditioned Morales -- he would’ve schooled the young Danny Garcia all the way through 12 rounds. I saw a close fight, but it hurts me that the score cards had something to do with Morales getting knocked down in the 11th round.

I couldn’t believe that his father had told him that they had lost every round, and was pushing Morales to look for the knock out. A tired Morales had to push harder to find the knock out in which ended in his demise. Morales was caught with a left hook that took him to the canvas.

After the fight, the score cards were all one sided. I believe that Morales did lose the fight, but the score should’ve been a lot closer than what the judges had it. Even with the knockdown, I had it 114-113. But, would there have been a knock down if Morales didn’t know the judge’s scores?

The HBO cast couldn’t believe when Morales’ father had told him he was losing every single round. They stated that he might be using it as a way to push his son to pick up the pace. That pace left him vulnerable since he had to concentrate on attacking, and left his defense behind.

The 12th round was a survival round for Morales, so the fight wouldn’t end in a knock out. It was disgusting to hear the judges score cards. For the Pacquiao fans, since I want Morales to hire Hereida, they have been accusing Marquez & Hereida as using PED’s because of Hereida‘s past. Pacquiao fans should be the last of people accusing anyone of using performance enhancing drugs.

Well lets bring up a few examples: Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire who works with Victor Conte.

Is Donaire using PED’s because he now works with VConte, who also has a past? No, it doesn’t. Nonito has stated that he would take any test, anytime & anywhere. That right there takes all floating doubts from any mind.

Now lets bring up Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, who works with Freddie Roach. Roach’s past has been stained with steroids. James Toney & 2 other fighters that he trained have tested positive for steroids. Now, in a way I blame a fighter to be responsible on what he puts in his body. Well, when Toney tested positive, Roach came out to Toney’s defense. Roach stated that Toney had a hand injury & that’s basically why they used it. He said he didn’t know that the steroids was still in his system, but that steroids didn’t win him the fight, intead his skills did. Toney was stripped off his title, suspended, and sued by his opponent for using an illegal substance.

Roach then and there had admitted to pushing steroids to his fighters by coming to Toney‘s defense. Does that mean Pacquiao used the same drugs? No, it doesn’t. Pacquiao could be a clean hard working fighter, or he could be a dirty cheater. That‘s the doubt that he has placed over himself.

Why did he turn down testing? It could’ve proven he’s a clean fighter, but he had more excuses on why he shouldn’t get tested in which it raised many eye brows. Pacquaio should step up now and do random blood and urine testing in the Bradley fight, and take all the doubt from the doubters. It’s the best thing he can do to completely clear his name from the ones that have found him guilty until proven innocent.

It’s not a form of control as some have put it, but to be a certain that it will be a level playing field for both fighters. If Morales continues his boxing career, I hope he hires a conditioning coach. I wouldn’t mind seeing him working with Alex Ariza as long as he hires someone that would get him in tip top shape. If not, he should retire… his legacy is written and will always be remembered for his heart & what he has done for Mexican boxing. I do not want to see him get hurt, and I'm sure all of boxing feels the same way.

Bernabe Concepcion: A Critical Review

20 Mar 2012, 5:43 am

Facing the 5'8 Mexican it was obvious he had to fight him short. But the manner of which Bernabe Concepcion fought Mikey Garcia last March 10, 2012 in Puerto Rico epitomizes the status of his boxing career, rousing an exasperation among Philippine boxing fans in its wake.

The Filipino, looking bulked up and strong, but never utilizing those qualities to his advantage, kept coming in and out of distance from his opponent. It would've been a good strategy fighting a taller boxer- dropping in to inflict hurt, throwing in a couple of punches inside and moving out in harm's way for defense, but Concepcion didn't execute proper side to side head movement doing it. And whenever he did it, he never followed it up with a concrete offense, negating it's whole purpose of attack and counter attacking on his opponent's misses. He bounced in and out within Miguel Angel Garcia's jabbing range with his head being an easy target, albeit boxing up, clipping his front leg sawing in and back like in a Filipino "Tinikling" dance, which can be dangerously timed to throw him off balance. Watching him I had to wonder if he truly understood what he was doing. He seemed to be so mechanical and doing things without understanding its purpose, and everything you do in boxing is done always in preparation for something else; it's almost like listening to a melody leading up to a climax. Concepcion's flow was all intro with no following.

Instead of trying to disrupt the rhythm of the more skilled pug, Garcia, it looked like he had settled himself nicely for his prey, ready for the taking. It was probably one of Garcia's easiest fights for some time, and it wasn't on account of his own doing. Concepcion's attacks were terribly sparse as he continued to ride on Garcia's momentum and from there, those who watched him fight and relied on that proverbial "Puncher's chance" of winning had started to give up too since he wasn't punching much at all. He wasn't confident enough and looked stiff, which are signals that he may not have prepared for this moment as thoroughly as all fighters ought to in major fights. His jabs were meaningless, firing a few inches short that they were not even enough to make his opponent flinch. He didn't stretch his jab nor bring it to it's target by doubling up on his lead foot. From a more technical perspective, his overall performance was almost as ugly as his fight with Juan Ma Lopez whom he fought swinging wide as if in a street fight, except it lasted longer.

Nothing in his game that night was congruent just as his career since he dropped his loyalty and jumped ship from one promoter to another, switched trainers from Freddie Roach to Buboy Fernandez, who's never boxed nor probably sparred seriously his entire life, and unto his current team. But I think the major reason why he is on the receiving end of such hard criticism for his recent failures is because Filipino boxing fans feel that he is capable of so much more considering his natural gifts of size, power and strength. It's just a matter of putting it all together and putting it to good use with proper guidance and discipline. Bernabe Concepcion, I reckon, must be having some alone time far from the madding crowd, and that is completely understandable. It's time he realizes that it's not merely on the lack of showing of boxing skill that frustrated his fans, but the palpable lack of discipline in training, inability to listen carefully and stick to the fight plan, lack of focus and dedication.  Manny Pacquiao himself blamed him for deviating from the game plan when he fought Lopez and Roach complained about his poor training habits before giving up on the partnership. Boxing without the labors of hard work in training is like a woman with beauty but no character. It just lacks the oomph, if you get my drift, and that is just as honest as I can put it for Concepcion. He has it, but he doesn't.

ARUM MADE MORE MONEY THAN PACQUIAO AND HIS OPPONENTS PUT TOGETHER

6 Mar 2012, 10:48 pm

According to these estimates from the numbers we have, Bob Arum Top Rank President has to explain where is the extra revenue from these PPV events. Let's start with the Pacquiao vs Diaz PPV from the numbers I was able to gather the event took in 13 million dollars total. Diaz took 850k from the night and Pacquiao took home 3 million. Which left extra revenue of almost 10 million to be explained where themoney went. We all know they are other parties that need to be paid as well, and Top Rank is a private company so we can only go by the numbers that have been reported since Arum hasn't opened the books.

Now we move forward to the Pacquiao vs Cotto fight, since the other bouts were co-promoted by Goldenboy Promotions. The fight did 1.2 million buys. which brought in close to 70million dollars. Cotto got upwards to 10 million dollars, While Pacquiao including PPV took home 22 million according to Top Rank. so that leaves over 40million in the wind to be divided. Pacquiao vs Clottey did 700k in buys and did 35.3million in sales. In which Pacquiao was paid 12 million dollars according to Top Rank, and Joshua Clottey got 1.5 million. Which leaves 21.8 million dollars to explained.

Former World Champion Paul Malignaggi (30-4-0, 6 KOs) has a huge task in his hands when he travels to Ukraine on April 29 for his title shot against WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (32-0-0, 21 KOs).

Fortunately for Malignaggi, scouting his opponent isn’t going to add on to that task, as both he and Senchenko, though not simultaneously, currently train out of the Wild Card Gym; Malignaggi with trainer Eric Brown, and Senchenko with Freddie Roach himself.

“Senchenko is a much more limited version of Amir Khan,” Malignaggi told this scribe together with 8CN’s Brad Cooney when he guested on dBoxing Source Radio Show last week.

Interestingly enough, it was the loss to Khan that prompted Malignaggi to move his camp to Roach’s world-renowned boxing gym, and despite past brush-ups with Wild Card mainstays, the Brooklyn-native maintains that he has been friendly and professional with people in the gym.

“We’re all friendly and cordial to each other,” Malignaggi described his relationship with Roach and people at the Wild Card Gym. “I don’t try to step on nobody’s toes. It’s a professional atmosphere in that gym, and I got work to do, so I go about my work, which is to get in shape for my fight,” he added.

And work he has done. Malignaggi credits a lot of his recent success and improvements to the level of competition available at his home gym. “I enjoy the work. I enjoy being there,” Malignaggi said, and added, “I just think the gym is a very competitive gym. It’s got a lot of the best fighters in the world, and it makes it a great place to train because the sparring is excellent.”

And on the subject of his old comments regarding his suspicions regarding performance enhancement drugs and the fighter whose image is plastered on the walls of the Wild Card Gym, Malignaggi has discovered performance enhancement within the gym for himself, albeit not changing his stance.

“I never changed my stance. I just backed off being so vocal about it, and I do that out of respect for Freddie. Freddie is doing me a big service for letting me work out at a gym where so many great fighters work out at,” Malignaggi stated, and revealed, “the level and quality of sparring, and level of work helps enhances me.”

As far as Roach training Senchenko, Malignaggi welcomes the challenge to face the Hall of Fame trainer anew, after being totally outclassed by Khan almost two years ago. “This is my chance to get even with Freddie,” Malignaggi joked.

Juan Manuel Marquez: 'Pacquiao and his excuses'

In a show called "Golpe-a-Golpe" (Blow-by-Blow) where Juan Manuel Marquez is one of the hosts, he said Manny Pacquiao is using "underestimation of opponent" as an excuse to explain his bad performance last Nov 12, 2011.

What I remember from watching HBO's 24/7 episodes is that Pacquiao himself said he will not underestimate Juan Manuel Marquez. Freddie Roach would say that this was the best training camp ever, and Alex Ariza would say that he has never seen Pacquiao so focused, and that "not even God could help Marquez".

Many excuses have come from the Pacquiao camp to explain his horrible performance in his last fight. Right after the fight, Pacquiao said he was having leg cramps, Roach said Pacquiao was over trained, and Ariza was saying that Pacquiao didn’t follow the training regimens. Others said that Pacquiao had an incident with Ariza, but now it appears that Pacquiao underestimated Marquez.

When will the excuses stop?

Why can’t Pacquiao and Team Pacquiao admit that he was outboxed by an older Marquez, who came up in weight to fight him? I certainly won’t forget the Pacquiao fans using the "foot stomping" trick, and "what was that yellow drink" as an excuse.

His upcoming fight against undefeated, and untested Tim Bradley is bogus. I can see why Pacquiao chose Bradley. Reason 1 is Bradley’s chin. He doesn’t have a chin. Reason 2 is that he doesn’t have KO power. He may be fast, but just look at his KO record, and the KOs he has are probably due to head butts. I predict a complete wipeout in Pacquiao’s favor. I don’t see anything that Bradley can bring to the table except for the head butts.

If Pacquiao wanted to prove that he had an off night, and like his excuse were leg cramps, overtraining, and just recently underestimation, he should be facing Marquez again for the 4th time. Is he waiting another 4 years to fight Marquez again? If the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight can’t happen, then the next logical choice should’ve been Marquez, other than that a 4th Marquez fight will bring in a lot of money. Marquez has the tactical and technical skills to make the 4th match a competitive fight for Pacquiao.

Pacquiao should really stop with the retirement comments. He has been saying he was going to retire for the past 4 years. If Pacquiao was really serious about retirement, he should announce it when he was in fact for sure he is going to retire. But for the time being Pacquiao has 3 more fights after Bradley, we’ll see…

On another note, Miguel Angel Cotto was interviewed and mentioned that he was getting a bad deal other than the catch weight from Top Rank for a Pacquiao-Cotto Rematch. The guarantee coming from Golden Boy and Mayweather was better than the guarantee offered by Top Rank. I’ll be looking forward to May 5th, and I’ll be rooting for Cotto. Good luck champ!!!

WBC light welterweight champion Erik "Terrible" Morales (52-7, 36KOs) is heavily entrenched in the Otomi Mountains of south central Mexico on the second leg of his training camp for his upcoming 1st defense of his title when he faces undefeated Danny "Swift" Garcia (22-0, 14KOs) of Philadelphia, PA.  The twelve round bout will be held at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas, on Saturday, March 24th, and televised live by HBO.  The fight card that also features light middleweight James Kirkland versus Carlos Molina will be presented by Golden Boy Promotions.

After capturing the WBC 140 lbs. title last March, Morales of Tijuana, Mexico, found himself in camp this past December for a January return but had to postpone after emergency gall bladder surgery.  Now completely healed, Morales is set to resume his career.  The twenty-three year old Garcia will be taking a considerable step when he faces the four time champion in as many divisions.  In his last bout, Garcia defeated via split decision former champion Kendall Holt to capture the vacant WBO Inter-Continental title.  Garcia also owns wins over former lightweight champion Nate Campbell and tough Mike Amaoutis.

Morales won his first title in 1997 by stopping Daniel Zaragoza for the WBC 122. strap.  He then went on to win titles at featherweight and super featherweight along with his current light welterweight crown on his way to becoming one of the most celebrated Mexican fighters in history.

Making his permanent training camp at the Otomi Ceremonial Center near Temoaya, Mexico, since '96, Morales is joined by his father and trainer Jose "Olivaritos" Morales, assistant trainer Fernando Fernandez, personal assistant and driver "Choko" Murrillo and super flyweight Ivan "Niño Maravilla" Morales (16-0, 11KOs), Erik's younger brother who will be making his stateside debut on the under card of March 24th.  Early next week Morales will begin his sparring sessions, flying in several sparring partners from different points of Mexico.
