Affair of the Senses - Food Trucks and Music Festival

By Butch

When the news broke late last year about Typhoon Sendong and the havoc it brought to the southern region of the Philippines, La Salle Alumni Association of Southern California  (LSAASC) president, Gary Legaspi, could not stop thinking about how the association could help. Gary thought of having a fundraising event. He started talking to the members of the association to come up with a plan. Gary's vision was to get any one and every one out there to be a part of this humanitarian effort.

As this was going to be a huge undertaking, it was imperative to get help outside of the association. People from various organizations and public offices were contacted. The association received positive feedback. People expressed their willingness to participate. In addition, as with any project, challenges are an integral part of the process.  However, the obstacles were not enough to discourage Gary and the association. Being "Green, Deep Within" and having the "Live the Animo" spirit, perseverance and dedication prevailed.

LSAASC has partnered with the City of Carson, City of Cerritos, Carson Christian Church, and the Fil-Am Chamber of Commerce South Bay Los Angeles Area for this fundraising event. Gawad Kalinga, being the benefitting organization, will take on the rebuilding Mindanao efforts in the Philippines through its network.

While it has been a long road, we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel; a bright light, in fact. On March 24, 2012, we will get to experience the hard work put into this effort by people who care and are willing to share. Subject: GK Relief Operations (pls. support and forward to your networks)

My Fellow Filipinos,

Typhoon Sendong has created a situation that has disrupted the celebration of the holiday season for thousands of families in Iligan, Cagayan de Oro and Dumaguete. They are now enduring difficulties due to lack of food and displacement from their homes. A good number even lost family members due to flash floods, mostly children.

While those among us who have been spared are thankful, we should not remain just thankful and comfortable but recognize that this moment calls for every Filipino to demonstrate solidarity!  It is our duty to heed the calls for help from  our countrymen!

Gawad Kalinga has activated GK Operation Walang Iwanan for Iligan, Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro.  Team GK from nearby provinces are now being mobilized to help the worst-hit areas.  Negros Occidental will help Dumaguete, Bukidnon and Agusan del Norte will help Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, while organizing the local volunteers of the impact areas as well.

We are targeting to initially generate 5000 food packs for the first two days starting December 19 to be simultaneously distributed to the different barangays in the affected areas. I appeal for you to act on this opportunity to be our brothers keeper.

Full details of GK Operation Walang Iwanan and how you can help can be found via

Contribute to a better Philippines - Deadline is August 3rd

By La Salle SoCal

Rana Foroohar has a column in Time Magazine called “The Curious Capitalist”.  In her article entitled “Our Greek Tragedy” she wrote “growth spreads widely through society only if educational improvements keep pace with technological advancement.  When public education falls behind, workers don’t have the skills to do high-tech jobs.”  This statement is not only true with technology but with almost anything.  Since we were young, our parents have drilled the importance of education into many of us.  We’ve been told many a times that education is the gift that keeps on giving.

Although we have no control over the Philippine public education system, we do all have the opportunity to provide an excellent Lasallian education to a well-deserving Filipino youth.  The “One La Salle Centennial Book” is a ground-breaking project by the eight USA and Canada La Salle Alumni Association chapters.  The proceeds from this book will be donated to the One La Salle Scholarship Fund.  The La Salle Brothers aim to have 20% of the La Salle students on scholarship.  This is an ambitious goal but with our help it can easily be achieved.  Below are the ways you can contribute:

o   If you are a Lasallian and live in the USA or Canada, you can do the following:

  1.  Submit your individual photo (recent or old) to the chapter closest to you (see below for chapter list and contacts).  Placing your individual picture in the book will not cost you anything.  Email your photos to LaSalleAlumCanadaUSA@gmail.com.
  2. Purchase a copy of the book ($50) from the chapter closest to you.
  3.  Become a sponsor by placing a
    • 5-line ad for $75 with a book or $50 without a book
    • Half-page Ad for $125 with a book or $100 without a book
    • Full-page Ad for $175 with a book or $150 without a book.

***These ads can contain information about your business or simply a message from you, your family, batchmates or group.***
  4.  Solicit from your family, friends, neighbors or co-workers for Ads for the Centennial Book.
  5.   Donate any amount to the closest chapter to you for the One La Salle Scholarship Fund.

o   If you are not a Lasallian and would like to contribute you can do items “2 through 5” above.

THE NEW DEADLINE IS AUGUST 3, 2011.

***Please note that each La Salle Alumni Association chapter is set-up differently.  Some may have a tax exempt status and some may not.  Do not assume that your contribution is tax deductible.  Please check with the individual chapters.***

Let’s all do our part.  Send this to your other Lasallians.  Post it on your Yahoo, Facebook  group and individual wall, notes and profile.

By La Salle SoCal
Dear Lasallians,

Attached is a flyer for the Super US Direct that was recently launched by Globe Telecom. This feature allows you to assign a US number to a Globe Phone in the Philippines. As a result, the user in the US can get in touch with their loved ones without waiting for them to log onto their computers at local rates or for free (depending on your calling plan). No hassles. No contract.

The best feature of this program is that Globe will donate $2 (two dollars) for every first-time sign up who enters the REFERRAL CODE : 00454B to the "One La Salle Schoalrship Fund". This donation will be from the La Salle Alumni Association chapters of Canada and the USA.

Please pass this on to your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers and help give the gift of education to deserving Filipino youth. Animo La Salle!!!

Lasallian North America Chapters Reach Out to the Philippines

By La Salle SoCal

Lasallian North America Chapters Reach Out to the Philippines

Then Archbishop of Manila Jeremiah James Harty, an alumnus of a La Salle school in St. Louis, MO, had called for Catholic schools to be set up in the Philippines, and saw his request of many years to the Christian Brothers finally bear fruit when nine La Salle Brothers arrived in Manila to establish De La Salle College in 1911.

In this year of the La Salle Centennial in Manila, the North American De La Salle alumni have made it their goal to publish One La Salle Centennial Book, a groundbreaking project by all the Canada and USA chapters, according to Southern California chapter president Gary Legaspi.

Gary adds that the One La Salle journal will not only bond Lasallians in the USA and Canada, it would also help batchmates and friends rediscover one another. With contents sourced from all chapters, the book will be edited by Robert Perez De Tagle.

Declares Gary, “It shows that despite being away from our homeland, Lasallians have lived the One La Salle vision, and that our true alma mater is deep within us.  One in education, in culture and in spirit, our philosophy remains ‘La Sallista Ka, La Sallista Ako’.”

It has come full circle. Says Bong Domdom, president of the alumni chapter in British Columbia, “After 100 years, the fruit of their labors have spread like a mustard seed all over the world. Similar to the pioneering Brothers in Manila, the alumni overseas over the years have employed their faith as their sword and armor, deeply rooted in what St. La Salle strove for.”

One hundred years later -- after the American Archbishop of Manila had seen his wish fulfilled with the coming of the Christian Brothers to the Philippines from America, and with the La Salle Philippines alumni organization’s initial history of attracting alumni of overseas La Salle schools -- now the dedicated members of the chapters from North America continue to reach across the seas to fellow alumni from all over the Philippines and from all the schools of the De La Salle Philippines.

-Robert Perez De Tagle, (LSGH ’78), philcontext@gmail.com, is a past president of the DLSAA Metro New York Chapter and Fil-Am community awardee in communications and media, and wrote for the DLSAA Congress held in Los Angeles.

One La Salle Centennial Book Canada/USA edition

By Gary

La Salle Alumni, Friends & Supporters:

In 2011, we will celebrate 100 years of La Sallian presence in the Philippines.  As part of the year-long celebrations, UMAEL (an association of alumni from La Sallian schools from all over the world) will also hold their bi-annual celebrations at the same time.  The World La Salle Alumni Centennial Convention will be held from October 26th through October 30th with the various campuses of Taft, Zobel, Dasmarinas and Greenhills each hosting a day of the event.  The convention theme is “One La Salle”.

The eight Canada and US La Salle Alumni Association chapters will participate in the celebrations by publishing a One La Salle Centennial book.  It will be similar to the school yearbooks and grouped by chapter affiliation.  The book will show the individual alumni currently residing in Canada or the US who graduated or studied at any La Sallian school in the Philippines.  The second portion will feature our friends, supporters and advertisers.

We encourage everyone who attended any La Salle school, whether you graduated or not, and reside in Canada or the United States to submit your picture, at no cost, and a short article about your experience at La Salle for our Centennial Book.  Your article should be no more than 2 paragraphs.  The deadline to submit your picture and article is May 30, 2011.  Please email your pictures and articles to LaSalleAlumCanadaUSA@gmail.com.  Below is the required format for your picture submission:

  • They must be no less than 450 x 600 pixels at 300 dpi but can be higher.
  • Must be labeled as such    "Name - First Unmarried Last Name in parentheses  Married Last Name, School Initials Grade Level or Course Year Graduated or Attended, (repeat if attended more than 1 school), Metro Area where located) include commas in the label.
    Example:
    GaryLegaspi, DLSU-GS1980,DLSZ-S1984,SouthernCalifornia.jpg
     Luz(Filipina)Americana,DLSU-LIA2001,LasVegas.jpg

Each chapter will keep 100% of the net proceeds from this important project.  Our La Salle Alumni Association of Southern California chapter will allocate the proceeds equally to the 17 La Salle schools.  In turn, the schools will have discretion to use the monies for scholarships, library books and equipment or any other area where they need the funds.

This will be a great opportunity for you to introduce your business to potential prospects not only within your regional area but to most major cities in Canada and the United States.  Most importantly, you will be helping educate many deserving young people.  We hope that you can support us on this worthy project.  You will find the advertising form with all the details attached to this letter.

The deadline to submit your payment and Ad is July 15, 2011.  The target book launch is September 16,  2011.  We hope to distribute the yearbook to our alumni, friends, supporters and advertisers before the October celebrations in Manila.

For more details about advertising in the book, send an email to DLSAASC@gmail.com.
