My Fellow Filipinos,
Typhoon Sendong has created a situation that has disrupted the celebration of the holiday season for thousands of families in Iligan, Cagayan de Oro and Dumaguete. They are now enduring difficulties due to lack of food and displacement from their homes. A good number even lost family members due to flash floods, mostly children.
While those among us who have been spared are thankful, we should not remain just thankful and comfortable but recognize that this moment calls for every Filipino to demonstrate solidarity! It is our duty to heed the calls for help from our countrymen!
Gawad Kalinga has activated GK Operation Walang Iwanan for Iligan, Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro. Team GK from nearby provinces are now being mobilized to help the worst-hit areas. Negros Occidental will help Dumaguete, Bukidnon and Agusan del Norte will help Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, while organizing the local volunteers of the impact areas as well.
We are targeting to initially generate 5000 food packs for the first two days starting December 19 to be simultaneously distributed to the different barangays in the affected areas. I appeal for you to act on this opportunity to be our brothers keeper.
Full details of GK Operation Walang Iwanan and how you can help can be found via

Contribute to a better Philippines - Deadline is August 3rd
By La Salle SoCalRana Foroohar has a column in Time Magazine called “The Curious Capitalist”. In her article entitled “Our Greek Tragedy” she wrote “growth spreads widely through society only if educational improvements keep pace with technological advancement. When public education falls behind, workers don’t have the skills to do high-tech jobs.” This statement is not only true with technology but with almost anything. Since we were young, our parents have drilled the importance of education into many of us. We’ve been told many a times that education is the gift that keeps on giving.
Although we have no control over the Philippine public education system, we do all have the opportunity to provide an excellent Lasallian education to a well-deserving Filipino youth. The “One La Salle Centennial Book” is a ground-breaking project by the eight USA and Canada La Salle Alumni Association chapters. The proceeds from this book will be donated to the One La Salle Scholarship Fund. The La Salle Brothers aim to have 20% of the La Salle students on scholarship. This is an ambitious goal but with our help it can easily be achieved. Below are the ways you can contribute:
o If you are a Lasallian and live in the USA or Canada, you can do the following:
- Submit your individual photo (recent or old) to the chapter closest to you (see below for chapter list and contacts). Placing your individual picture in the book will not cost you anything. Email your photos to LaSalleAlumCanadaUSA@gmail.com.
- Purchase a copy of the book ($50) from the chapter closest to you.
-
Become a sponsor by placing a
- 5-line ad for $75 with a book or $50 without a book
- Half-page Ad for $125 with a book or $100 without a book
- Full-page Ad for $175 with a book or $150 without a
book.
***These ads can contain information about your business or simply a message from you, your family, batchmates or group.***
- Solicit from your family, friends, neighbors or co-workers for Ads for the Centennial Book.
- Donate any amount to the closest chapter to you for the One La Salle Scholarship Fund.
o If you are not a Lasallian and would like to contribute you can do items “2 through 5” above.
THE NEW DEADLINE IS AUGUST 3, 2011.
***Please note that each La Salle Alumni Association chapter is set-up differently. Some may have a tax exempt status and some may not. Do not assume that your contribution is tax deductible. Please check with the individual chapters.***
Let’s all do our part. Send this to your other Lasallians. Post it on your Yahoo, Facebook group and individual wall, notes and profile.
